Football Tournament Workouts on Your Terms: Roberto Burlew's Training Story

Roberto Burlew, Sarasota Paradise’s foundation player, has built his football career on discipline, consistency, and self-directed training.

This season, YESOUL has partnered with five football athletes, including Roberto, to showcase how “moving on your terms” can be applied by anyone, on or off the pitch. Whether you’re a professional player or simply enjoy staying active, the lesson is clear: fitness should adapt to your life, not the other way around.

From Football Family to Professional Player

Football has always been part of Roberto’s life.

His father, Rob Burlew, played professionally for the Cincinnati Riverhawks, giving Roberto an early look at the commitment and discipline required to compete at a high level. But having a footballer as a father didn’t guarantee success.

Instead, it gave him something more valuable: an example of what dedication looks like over time.

Roberto’s own path took him through collegiate football at Northern Kentucky before continuing his development at Wisconsin. Like many athletes pursuing professional opportunities, he spent years working toward a goal without knowing exactly when—or if—the opportunity would arrive.

Eventually, he became part of a USL League Two championship-winning team and later became the first player from that squad to move into the professional ranks. Today, he plays for Sarasota Paradise, where he has been recognized as a foundational player within the club.

But when Roberto looks back on his journey, he doesn’t focus first on titles or milestones.

He remembers the work.

The Training Habits That Keep Him Improving

One thing Roberto has learned throughout his career is that consistency matters more than constantly pushing harder.

His weekly routine is built around balance. Instead of training every day, he separates focused training days from recovery days, typically dedicating three to four days each week to deeper training sessions.

That structure allows him to maintain intensity when it matters while giving his body the recovery it needs.

But physical training is only part of the process.

On many evenings, Roberto can be found watching MLS match replays or studying coaching and tactical videos. He pauses clips, rewinds sequences, and pays attention to positioning, movement patterns, and decision-making.

For him, learning is part of training.

Understanding the game helps him continue developing as a player, even when he’s away from the pitch.

It’s a mindset that reflects the idea of moving on your terms: finding a routine that supports long-term growth rather than chasing short-term results.

The Five-Year Climb Nobody Saw

Fans often see the highlights.

They see professional contracts, championship celebrations, and match-day performances.

What they don’t see are the years that happen before those moments.

For Roberto, the journey from college player to professional footballer took patience.

There were seasons when progress felt invisible. There were moments when opportunities didn’t arrive as quickly as expected. There were periods of uncertainty when the future wasn’t guaranteed.

Those are often the hardest parts of any journey—not the work itself, but continuing to believe in the process when the outcome remains unclear.

Many people experience similar challenges outside of sport.

Whether building a career, starting a fitness routine, or working toward a personal goal, progress rarely happens in a straight line.

Roberto’s story shows that perseverance isn’t about moving quickly.

It’s about continuing to move forward.

What Would Roberto Tell His Younger Self?

If Roberto could give advice to his younger self, it might sound surprisingly simple:

"Stop comparing your timeline to everyone else's."

In football, it’s easy to look around and focus on who signed first, who moved up faster, or who seems further ahead.

But over time, Roberto learned that comparison rarely helps performance.

The only timeline that truly matters is your own.

That lesson extends far beyond football.

Many people delay progress because they feel like they’re behind. They compare their fitness level, career path, or achievements to someone else’s journey.

But meaningful growth happens when you focus on your next step—not someone else’s.

For Roberto, success wasn’t built through comparison.

It was built through consistency.

What Football Season Teaches Us About Progress

Football season reminds us that the moments fans see on match day represent only a small part of the story.

Behind every performance are months—and often years—of preparation.

The same principle applies to everyday life.

People often notice the outcome: the promotion, the fitness transformation, the accomplishment.

What they don’t see are the ordinary days that made it possible.

The early mornings.
The repeated effort.
The decision to keep going when motivation feels low.

Roberto’s journey reflects that reality.

Progress isn’t always dramatic. More often, it’s built quietly through small actions repeated over time.

Move on Your Terms

Roberto Burlew’s story isn’t just about professional football.

It’s about trusting a process that takes longer than expected.

It’s about staying committed when progress feels slow.

And it’s about understanding that success doesn’t have to follow someone else’s timeline.

At YESOUL, we believe fitness and personal growth should fit real life. Some days will feel productive. Others will feel challenging. Both are part of the journey.

Roberto demonstrates that the athlete mindset isn’t reserved for professionals. Everyone can move on their own terms—finding time for consistent exercise, embracing setbacks, and continuing forward one step at a time.

This football season, take inspiration from his journey.

Stay consistent.

Trust your timeline.

And most importantly, move on your terms.

How will you move on your terms this football season?
